New LIGMAN Urban Lighting with Occupancy Sensing Catalogue

Urban Lighting With Occupancy Sensing
Occupancy Sensing

LIGMAN’s new catalogue for Urban Lighting with Occupancy Sensing is now available to download from our website https://www.ligman.com/product-brochures/

The push to provide more sustainable lighting solutions goes far beyond the pure energy saving attributes of higher efficacy LED and other energy-efficient products. But often the main task of artificial lighting, i.e. to provide correct and appropriate visual environments to suit the task and situation, gets forgotten. The advent and design of controls too can often be purely for energy saving rather than designed to actually be advantageous to us or the environment and applied in a specific manner.

For external lighting poor controls and energy saving products have too often been installed to the detriment of users’ safety and wellbeing. But led by new legislation and guidance emanating from bodies such as the US Department of Energy and California Energy Commission, more emphasis is now being placed on applied controls to maximise energy savings whilst maintaining correct lighting suitable to occupation, traffic density, user task and, most importantly, applying common sense.

External columns and bollards provide localised pedestrian lighting for urban realm applications and can also serve as visual place-holders. Whilst often necessary for both security and wayfinding, the areas they serve can frequently be vacant for much of the evening and almost certainly during late night and the early morning hours. During those hours when spaces are unoccupied or infrequently used, energy is wasted on fully illuminated those spaces that actually only need significantly reduced lighting for the density and usage. However, switching circuits off entirely on basic timers can be counter-productive if just one person needs light for safe passage or security systems and public cannot see into their surround.

Therefore, providing external energy efficient LED fixtures with inbuilt occupancy sensors, positioned and pre-programmed to either provide an addressable on-off or dimmed performance has become something which benefits both clients and public alike. LIGMAN now offers the option of integral sensors to a growing range of our column and bollard portfolio. These microwave sensors with LIGMAN’s superior optics, can achieve spacings up to around 30m (90feet) between columns and even 20m (60feet) for our bollards and still provide full detection.

Sensors can be provided for either On/Off or dimming control and available for group operation together with adjustable threshold and time-delay settings for optimising energy saving and helping reduce the impact on environmental light pollution. This all done utilising LIGMAN’s wireless handheld configuration tool.

Australian Smart Lighting Summit Delegates Award

Australian Smart Lighting Cover
Australian Smart Lighting Summit Delegates Award

Not only did LIGMAN and our exclusive Australia distributer; Efficient Lighting Systems (ELS), have a very enjoyable time meeting many new clients and designers at what was a highly successful event, we walked away with an award too! LIGMAN’s Vancouver Decorative range won the Delegates Design Choice Award, one of only two awards given out at the event.

The flexibility and ability for bespoke arrangements for Vancouver was demonstrated by showcasing a laser-cut Melbourne panel to honour the host city for the Summit. Prior to the event the ELS team won many more public admirers too, when they took the column around the city and photographed it against typical Melbourne views.

LIGMAN’s Global Design Director; Martin Valentine attended the Summit to deliver a well-received presentation challenging the lack care given to public realm lighting projects as often being poor cousins to those considering street lighting. His participation in a panel discussion shortly after raised some new aspects for the audience to consider and debate on the subject of smart lighting and cities.

Congratulations to all involved on a very successful and enjoyable event all round.

LIGHT EDU Symposium 2018

LIGHT EDU SYMPOSIUM
LIGHT EDU SYMPOSIUM

LIGMAN are delighted to have been sponsors for the 2018 LIGHT EDU Symposium held on the 4-6 October in Timisoara, Romania. The theme of this year’s event was “Using light for improving the perception of the city” and the programme included many renowned lighting designers and practitioners involved in the presentation program and workshops.

The first edition of LIGHT EDU was in 2016 and the event is open to all who want to learn about the complexity of light. The event is a comprehensive programme of educational, informational, research and cultural mediation events in the field of architectural and technical lighting. The programme was initiated out of the necessity of long-term substantiation of the lighting design practice in Romania, where there is still a need to raise the awareness of the importance of interior and urban lighting.

In addition to LIGMAN’s sponsorship, Emre Güneş; Lighting Design Advocate and LIGMAN’s Business Development Director; gave 2 provoking presentations: “Human-centric lighting: A marketing concept or a reality? A summary of what is known so far” and “Searching for darkness… What is light pollution?”

The symposium is organized by Romanian Order of Architects – Timiș Territorial Branch, in partnership with the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism from Timișoara.  The impressive venue was the auditory of the Timiș County Council, an extension of the previous Administrative Palace, completed in 2010. The interior courtyard of the older building was covered with a glazed roof, hosting an exhibition hall and foyer to the auditorium, highlighting the old facade.
