Smart lighting has existed at a fundamental level for many years. It is common for street lighting to be controlled via a time clock or PE-cell to regulate switching times. Rather than having someone manually switch the lighting on or off. 

Thanks to digital technology the possibilities of smart lighting have become more sophisticated. Through the use of technology such as LIGHTCONNECT and control software, lighting across an entire city can be monitored and controlled. 

Each individual street light pole has a unique address, which can communicate to the control software the status of the luminaire. Does the fitting need servicing? has the street light pole been damaged? Rather than having to check in person, the software enables remote monitoring of the lighting.

The remote monitoring and control of street light poles was a significant upgrade from time clocks and PE cells. With the wide spread adoption of LED street lighting throughout the world, new possibilities emerged: Dimming and colour temperature regulation. 

Traditional street lights such as metal halide and high pressure sodium, although bright and efficient, had their limitations. There was a warm up time for the gasses in the lamp, and they only operated at one level of intensity. The colour temperature of the lamp was also determined by the lamp technology and could not be changed.

LED street lights by comparison have instantaneous start, there is no warm up time for LEDs. Outdoor LED street lights also enable the facility to dim the lighting. This means the lighting can be dimmed during periods of low activity, or after a specific time. The ability to change the colour temperature enables outdoor street lights to adapt to knowledge about the impact of blue light.

As studies have shown, it isn’t only the brightness of street lighting that can impact the natural world. But also the colour temperature of the light. Much as blue light from screens can affect the circadian rhythms of humans, blue light also impacts flora and fauna. 

Nature Friendly Lighting uses tunable white technology to regulate the colour temperate of outdoor street lights. Varying from 3000k for human vision, to amber during periods of low activity. The intensity of light is also reduced during these periods, regulating back up when a motion sensor detects human presence. 

This environmentally conscious smart lighting benefits not only the plants and animals in the lit areas. But also saves energy. The street lighting no longer has to operate at full capacity throughout the entire night.
